CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF Added to 2009 Neighborhood Playhouse Season

Tennessee Williams classic returns to the South Bay for the first time in 20 Years

Artistic Director, Brady Schwind announced today that Tennessee Williams' 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning classic, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF will join the Neighborhood Playhouse’s 2009 season. The production runs July 9 - 26. Reserved tickets are $22-28 and are available by calling 1.800.595.4849 or online at www.neighborhoodplayhouse.net

As a special promotional offer, patrons will receive a 50% off discount on selected seats ordered before May 31st when they use the discount code “MAGGIE” at the time of telephone and internet ticket purchase.

One of the most acclaimed productions of the 20th century, CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF tells the drama of seething passions that beset a wealthy Southern family whose lives are stripped of pretense in a shattering moment of revelation.  The piece was an instant phenomenon during its original Broadway run starring Barbara Bel Geddes, Ben Gazzara and Burl Ives, with subsequent Broadway revivals starring such acclaimed actors as Elizabeth Ashley, Kathleen Turner, Ashley Judd and James Earl Jones.  A film adaptation in 1958, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, was nominated for 6 Academy Awards ©.

The Neighborhood Playhouse production will be produced with special permission from the estate of Tennessee Williams, and will replace the

previously announced musical production, ROMANCE / ROMANCE originally scheduled for July.

Schwind, who is also slated to direct the production, speaks about the project. “Tennessee Williams is perhaps the name most singularly associated with great American Theatre. It has been a goal from the very beginning of The Neighborhood Playhouse’s formation to someday present one of his works, which are, quite rightfully, carefully guarded by Williams’s estate.  When the opportunity arose for us to present CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, we knew we had to jump on it. It’s a brilliant, timeless, enormously popular piece that is all too rarely performed in Los Angeles and in particular, in the South Bay, where it hasn’t been seen in twenty years.  We are honored to be chosen to present this iconic classic, and know audiences will be shocked, moved and enticed by the story of ‘Maggie, ‘Brick,’ and  ‘Big Daddy’ all over again in this exciting new production, made all the more electric by the intimacy of the Neighborhood Playhouse‘s unique performance space.

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF will be produced by Suzan Fairchild and Karin Frasier. The creative team for the production will be announced at a later time.

Performances are held at the historic Neighborhood Church, where the Neighborhood Playhouse is in residence: 415 Paseo Del Mar, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274.

A hilarious new comedy from the Charles Busch, the outrageous mind behind The Tale of the Allergists Wife and Psycho Beach Party.

April, 1865. The week the Civil War Ends, legendary actress Laura Keene has only one ambition. President Lincoln simply must attend her closing night performance at the Ford’s Theatre! Her only obstacle – the rather hackneyed group of supporting players she’s been saddled with. As Laura moves ruthlessly towards her goal, she and her theatrical troupe must face an inevitable collision with history.

“Hilarious, delicious fun,” cheers the New York Times. “A testament to playwright Charles Bush’s belief that theatre can and should reflect the human comedy at its most ridiculous and its most uplifting.”

PALOS VERDES – The Neighborhood Playhouse is honored to open its 2008 season with a rare Los Angeles staging of Peter Shaffer’s Tony Award winning modern masterpiece, AMADEUS, directed by Neighborhood Playhouse Artistic Director, Brady Schwind. One of the most acclaimed and popular plays of the 20th century, AMADEUS has been honored with five Tony Awards© eight Academy Awards©, and extended London and Broadway runs. The play asks the question, “What happens when mediocrity recognizes itself in the face of genius – especially when genius comes in the form of an uncouth child prodigy?” Playwright, Peter Shaffer digs deeply into the psyche of court composer Antonio Salieri, as he struggles with the growing genius of a younger Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. As Salieri’s jealousy builds, his relationship with Mozart becomes the battleground of the envious composer’s battle with God. This contemporary classic looks at their tortured relationship and the notion that divine greatness doesn’t always fall to those society would consider worthy.

Directed by acclaimed Los Angeles and New York based director and dramaturge, Brady Schwind, regional actors Richard Perloff (San Diego Old Globe, National Shakespeare Company) leads the cast as Salieri opposite Evan McNamara (A.R.T., Pasadena Playhouse) as Mozart. Afton Quast (Utah Shakespeare Festival) features as Mozart’s wife, Constanze Weber. The balance of the cast includes: Jack Messenger as Count Orisni-Rosenberg, Michael Hovance as Joseph II, Chris O’Connor as Baron Van Swieten, James Larsen and Michael Tushaus as the 'Venticelli, ' Perry Shields as Count Von Strack and local favorites: Karin Frasier, Bill Pence, Lois Bourgon, Michael Frasier, Jane Childerhose, and Bob Miller as the court of Vienna.

Neighborhood Playhouse
2008 Season Announcement

“AMADEUS;” L.A. Premiere of “PARADE” to open 2008

Palos Verdes Estates, CA – Following their acclaimed August 2007 production of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, The Neighborhood Playhouse Artistic Director Brady Schwind today announced the first two selections of Theatre Company’s premiere season of plays and musicals. The sophisticated and ambitious slate of plays includes a masterwork by Peter Shaffer, the Los Angeles premiere of an acclaimed Tony Award winning musical. Schwind states: “These plays and musicals speak to a common theme of understanding and compassion. They are important, passionate works exploring our modern world, a place in which human struggle for comprehension extends not only to social unrest, but often to our very highest spiritual power. I chose these plays because they are not only exciting, rarely performed pieces, but also, because I believe there is strong desire, particularly in the South Bay cities of Los Angeles, for a new kind of theatre that extends beyond the traditional offerings we have become accustomed to.”

Opening Nights are Press Nights.

The Neighborhood Playhouse is thrilled to open the 2008 Season with a rare Los Angeles production of this modern masterpiece, in a version rewritten since its original Broadway and film successes.

What happens when mediocrity recognizes itself in the face of genius? Especially when genius comes in the form of a vulgar child prodigy? This is the challenge posed as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, perhaps the greatest composer of all time, unknowingly becomes the battleground of envious court composer Antonio Salieri’s strife with God.

From Peter Shaffer, the master storyteller behind EQUUS and BLACK COMEDY, AMADEUS combines intrigue, suspense, comedy, and passion with exquisite costumes and some of the most stirring music ever written.

Based on the true story of Leo Frank, wrongly convicted of the murder of thirteen year old Mary Phagan in Atlanta, Georgia in 1913, PARADE recounts the press frenzy and public hatred surrounding the trial, and his wife’s crusade for justice. In a time of religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, this stirring musical explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds.

PARADE received its world première at the Lincoln Center in 1998 under the directorship of Harold Prince. It received 9 Tony Award nominations, and won the Awards for both Book and Score, as well as the Drama Desk and New York Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Musical.
